Doctor examines spider veins in Wheaton, IL

You’re not alone if you have tiny threadlike veins in your legs or other parts of your body. Multiple studies show that nearly all adults have spider veins sooner or later.

At McWilliams Vein Center in Wheaton, IL, we exclusively treat vein conditions, from the smallest spider to more complex varicose veins and conditions like deep vein thrombosis. Esteemed board-certified vascular specialist Dr. McWilliams and our highly trained experts have many years of experience treating spider veins using the gold standard approach: Surface sclerotherapy.

We prioritize patient comfort and schedule one-on-one with every patient because we believe you deserve to understand your procedure. Below, we explain how surface sclerotherapy works so you know what to expect.

What is Surface Sclerotherapy?

Surface sclerotherapy is a treatment to eliminate small veins that are close to the skin surface (spider veins). In this procedure, Dr. McWilliams injects a sclerosant—a solution that irritates the vein walls. The veins react by permanently closing off, a process called fibrotic occlusion.

Over time, the veins wither and die. You absorb and dispose of the old vein tissue naturally. The blood within the spider veins moves into other healthy veins nearby.

Surface sclerotherapy can improve cosmetic appearance significantly through quick and easy office-based treatments.

Types of Surface Sclerotherapy

We offer two surface sclerotherapy options. With smaller spider veins, Dr. McWilliams often uses a liquid sclerosant.

He typically injects a sclerosant foam for larger spider veins, which expands once inside the veins to trigger their closure. With foam sclerotherapy, Dr. McWilliams often uses live ultrasound imaging to locate and inject the problem veins precisely.

The Treatment Plan for Surface Sclerotherapy

Most patients have multiple spider veins that require treatment; in some cases, other underlying veins may also need treatment. Dr. McWilliams performs a comprehensive evaluation of your veins and discusses your concerns with you in detail so he can recommend the ideal treatment plan for your veins.

Many patients have three or four treatment sessions, one month apart, for ideal results.
