Varithena is a great fit for safety, efficacy, and comfort. This month’s blog is your guide to Varithena: What it is, how it works, and whether it can help you.
What Is Varithena and How Does It Work?
Varithena is a prescription injectable treatment for varicose veins caused by poor function in the great saphenous vein (the body’s longest vein) and its branches. It works especially well for people with bulging surface veins caused by hidden vein valve problems.
Dr. McWilliams injects Varithena into the vein through one small access point (or two when necessary) to reach areas of malfunctioning veins. Once inside, the microfoam spreads through the vein, replacing the blood inside and ensuring full contact with the inner vein wall. This allows for consistent treatment across the entire vein surface.
Even though Varithena uses a low concentration of the active ingredient (polidocanol), it effectively damages the lining of the faulty vein. This causes vein collapse and shrinkage, effectively pushing the blood out of the vein. The collapsed vein can no longer transport blood, and your body naturally reroutes blood flow through healthier nearby veins. What remains are tiny gas bubbles that you can quickly absorb into your bloodstream.
The Varithena Experience
Varithena treatments typically take less than 60 minutes, and Dr. McWilliams performs all treatments here in our comfortable office setting. First, he uses advanced imaging to map out your veins and create a personalized treatment plan.
Most patients feel little more than a quick pinch or a pressure sensation during treatment. It only requires one or two needle sticks.
Afterward, we wrap your leg with a compression bandage. We encourage you to start walking right away, as this helps support circulation and healing.
Most patients resume regular activities immediately. You may notice some mild tenderness or bruising, but serious side effects are rare.
Studies show that more than 94% of patients experience significant relief, often within only a few weeks. Most patients only need one treatment.
