How Are Surface and Foam Sclerotherapy Different?

Sclerotherapy is one of the most effective minimally invasive treatments for spider veins and varicose veins. At McWilliams Vein Center, Dr. Sean McWilliams is a board-certified phlebology specialist who has been exclusively treating vein disease since 2006.

Our practice is recognized for providing comprehensive vein care tailored to each patient’s individual needs. Sclerotherapy is one of the treatments Dr. McWilliams performs most frequently, but all sclerotherapy isn’t the same. Today we’re exploring two popular forms: Surface and foam sclerotherapy.

What Is Surface Sclerotherapy?

Surface sclerotherapy is true to its name. It targets small, visible spider veins located near the skin’s surface.

During treatment, a fine needle delivers a liquid sclerosing solution directly into the vein, causing the vessel to collapse and fade over time. This procedure is ideal for minor cosmetic concerns.

Surface sclerotherapy is often the right choice for delicate facial or leg veins. Patients can usually return to their daily activities immediately, although Dr. McWilliams typically recommends wearing compression stockings for optimal healing.

What Is Foam Sclerotherapy?

Foam sclerotherapy uses the same medication as liquid sclerotherapy, but it’s mixed with a blend of gases to achieve a foam consistency. This allows the solution to displace blood more effectively and maintain contact with the vein walls for a longer period.

Because of its thicker texture, foam can treat larger, deeper varicose veins that liquid sclerotherapy may not address.

Foam sclerotherapy provides excellent precision because Dr. McWilliams uses ultrasound guidance to reach the problem vein. It’s particularly useful for veins that aren’t easily accessible with surface techniques and is considered one of the most advanced non-surgical approaches to vein care available today.

There’s generally no downtime required, but as with surface sclerotherapy, it’s important to support healing with compression stockings.

Choosing the Right Vein Treatment

Both surface and foam sclerotherapy are safe and highly effective when performed by a skilled vein specialist, such as Dr. McWilliams. The best choice depends on:

  • Vein size
  • Vein location
  • How severe the vein disease is

Some patients benefit from combining both methods for more comprehensive results. Dr. McWilliams and our team can evaluate your veins using ultrasound imaging to recommend a customized treatment plan that restores your skin’s natural appearance and comfort.
