What is Thermal Ablation?

Thermal ablation is a heat-based procedure to close unhealthy veins. Precisely-applied heat triggers veins to seal off. Without further blood supply, the closed veins shrink, and your body flushes them out over time. There are two types of thermal ablation. Both FDA-approved options have 90%-plus success rates.

Types of Thermal Ablation Treatments

We offer two thermal ablation options.

  • Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA): This procedure uses an FDA-approved laser fiber. After making a tiny incision, Dr. McWilliams guides the laser fiber through a thin catheter and into your problem vein. The fiber delivers energy that heats the vein. This causes its collapse. The blood from the treated vein is rerouted to healthy veins.
  • Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA): In this procedure, Dr. McWilliams inserts the VNUS Closure FAST®, an FDA-approved catheter, into your vein through a small incision. It’s a procedure similar to EVLA, but radiofrequency energy closes the vein in this case.

Both thermal ablation procedures offer effective vein closure with very low recurrence rates. Dr. McWilliams evaluates your unique needs to determine which one would be the most effective for you.

What Does Thermal Ablation Feel Like?

We prioritize patient comfort. Our treatment rooms are large, calming, and serene areas where you can relax. We provide local anesthesia to ensure you experience little or no pain during or after your procedure.

Patients can resume normal activities after their treatment—no downtime is needed. Because incisions are so small, scars are rare.
